Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE -- Early runs and some big league help allowed the St. Lucie Mets to grab an 8-3 series opening victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Friday at Digital Domain Park.

The Mets plated five early runs against Stone Crabs starter Enny Romero to jump out to a commanding lead. It turned out to be enough to allow St. Lucie to win for the seventh time in as many tries against Charlotte this season.

Those runs were in support of eight-year Major League veteran Chris Young, who worked into the seventh inning to record the win in what could be his final minor league start before rejoining New York.

Young (1-0) allowed three runs - all earned - on five hits over 6-1/3 innings of work. He did not issue a walk while striking out one batter. He may yet need more time in the minors to get himself ready for the season as he recovers from surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder last May.

Charlotte hoped that Romero (1-3) would be able to continue his recent trend of providing quality starts. Instead, Wilmer Flores belted a two-run homer to give the Mets the lead in the first. That was the first home run that Romero had allowed since July of last season, a span of 20 starts and 90 innings. He lasted just four innings and was charged with six runs - five earned - in taking the loss.

Offensively for the Stone Crabs, Derek Dietrich finished 2-for-4 with home run and a double. His solo-blast against Young in the sixth inning was the final Charlotte run of the evening.

St. Lucie got RBI's from five different men, including two from Flores and Robbie Shields. Flores has now driven in eight runs in seven games between the two clubs.

The series continues on Saturday as the Stone Crabs send righty Albert Suarez to the mound against Mets lefty Angel Cuan. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
