February 20, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, Conn., February 20, 2003) â Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Commissioner Steve Ryan announced on Thursday that Philadelphia KiXX forward Kevin Sloan will replace injured Cleveland Force striker Hector Marinaro on the 2003 Eastern Conference All-Star Team. The MISL's 2003 All-Star Game will be played at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Sunday, March 9. Kickoff for the League's midseason classic is set for 1:30 p.m. Central Time. The game will be televised on Fox Sports World from 8:00 â 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, March 21.
Sloan will make the third All-Star appearance of his career. The 37-year-old forward is Philadelphia's second-leading scorer this season with 21 goals and 49 points (20th in the League) in 20 games. On December 8 against Dallas, Sloan became the 12th man in League history to score 1,000 points, and has registered 1,005 career points entering the week.
The native of Washington, D.C., is the 10th-leading goal scorer in League history with 431 goals in 343 games. Sloan has notched four 100-point seasons throughout his 11-year career, which began in 1988-89 with the Dayton Dynamo. He has scored 14 points in his last four outings.
Marinaro, suffering from the effects of a concussion sustained this season, has not played since January 11. The 39-year-old has scored 14 goals and 46 points in 15 games in 2002-03, and remains the League's all-time leader in points (2,301), goals (923), and 2pgs (665). He is also the leading scorer in All-Star Game history with 46 points.
The native of Toronto will head to Milwaukee as the assistant coach for Force skipper Andy Schmetzer, who was named the head coach for the Eastern Conference side this past Tuesday. Schmetzer, whose team is 13-14 overall and 12-12 since he assumed the coaching duties on October 16, will make his first All-Star coaching appearance.
As the League's showcase event, the 2003 MISL All-Star Weekend will feature three days of professional indoor soccer celebration, including an All-Star Press Conference and Luncheon, a Commissioner's Dinner for "Keith's Kids" (a charitable organization headed by coach Tozer), the Pizza Hut MISL Youth Skills Competition, the Spalding MISL All-Star Skills Competition, and a Legends Game featuring former indoor soccer greats.
