Sliders Score Early, Hold off Bombers for 11-8 Win

June 22, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release

Matt Stevens drove in four runs on three hits, including a two-run home run, for the Springfield Sliders as they beat the Dubois County Bombers 11-8 in front of an energized crowd of 1,185 at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.

Matt Tellor and Matt Highland also drove in a pair, and Jake Bergren and Jake Ingold also had an RBI each for the Sliders, who used a six-run fourth inning and a three-run seventh to hold Dubois County at bay.

Cody Repenning (1-3) earned the win for Springfield, going six innings and allowing four runs - three earned - on three hits and three walks as he struck out four.

David Frank relieved Repenning but gave up two runs on a Brendan Neel homerun and only retired one Bomber. He was replaced by Nick Capra, who worked through one full inning while giving up a two-run shot to Bombers catcher Chris Tavares.

TR Dunne pitched the final one and two-thirds innings to earn the save, allowing only one Bomber to reach on an error.

Ty Simpson (2-1), who entered Friday's game with the Prospect League's third-best ERA at 1.17, took the loss and lasted only three and one-third innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks, although only three of the runs were earned as his defense committed a pair of errors in the Sliders' six-run fourth inning.

John Rashid took over and gave up four earned runs while pitching three and a third, and Spencer Sapp worked the final two and one-third innings to hold the Sliders at 11 runs.

Dubois County took a 1-0 lead without a hit in the bottom of the first, but that wouldn't last long as Springfield tied it in the top of the next inning.

The Bombers trimmed the deficit to 7-3 in the fourth, and the two sides traded runs in the sixth before the Sliders extended their lead to 11-4 in the top of the seventh.

Dubois County scored two in the bottom of that inning as well as the bottom of the eighth (on the pair of two-run home runs), but Dunne and the Sliders locked it up from there.

The Bombers travel to Hannibal, Mo., for a pair against the Cavemen while Springfield plays a home-and-home with the Danville Dans.
