Slam face toughest test in Vermont on Wednesday

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Bellingham Slam will face their toughest test this season as they take on the top-ranked Vermont Frost Heaves in the quarterfinals of the ABA Playoffs in Burlington, Vt. on Wednesday.

The Slam (23-10) are making their second trip to Vermont this season, having lost two games to the Frost Heaves on Feb. 8 and 10. The Slam fell by 11 points in the first game, then lost by five points, 112-107, in a much closer contest in the second game. The Slam actually led by five points with under four minutes to play in the game on Feb. 10, before Vermont was able to rally for the win.

The expansion Frost Heaves (31-6) are enjoying great success during their first season in the ABA. Their first place ranking has assured them of home court advantage through the post-season. The Frost Heaves are led by a pair of ABA All-Stars in guard Aaron Cook and forward Antonio Burks. Cook is leading his team with 16.5 points per game, while Burks comes in second with a 14.8 points per game scoring average. Vermont made it into the third round by defeating the Strong Island Sound, 103-75, in a second round game on Sunday.

The Slam earned their way into the third round by trouncing the Hollywood Fame, 137-103, in a second round contest on Saturday. All-Star forward Mike Parker led Bellingham with 34 points in the game, and is averaging 30.6 points per game this season. Parker leads a trio of players on the Slam averaging at least 20 points per game. Guards Jacob Stevenson and Brandon Hartley are averaging 21.1 and 20.7 points per game, respectively.

Wednesday's game is set for 7:05 p.m. (4:05 p.m. in Bellingham) at the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington. The game will be broadcast live on the internet by WSNO 1450 AM, with fans being able to listen in by visiting www.wsno1450.net.

The winner of Wednesday's third round game will move on to the semifinals of the ABA Playoffs at a date to be determined.
