Bellingham Slam News Release
CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A record night for each team made the difference as the Bellingham Slam were defeated by the San Diego Wildcats, 113-105, in an American Basketball Association game in Chula Vista, Calif. Sunday evening.
San Diego's (4-2) record night came from guard Cardell Butler, who scored a franchise-record 39 points, including a 7-for-10 performance from three-point range. Butler opened the game by putting up 18 points in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for Bellingham (6-3), its record came by way of a poor third quarter in which they tied a team mark by scoring only 15 points. The dismal quarter allowed the Wildcats to erase a seven point Slam lead at halftime and take a seven point lead of their own, at 79-72, going into the fourth quarter.
The Slam were able to rally in the fourth quarter to tie the game on two separate occasions, the latest on a Mike Parker jumper with 5:41 remaining that knotted the score at 92-92. But San Diego was able to regroup, and went on a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Bellingham was led in scoring by Michael Jones, who scored 24 points, and Jacob Stevenson, who added 21. For the second straight night, the Slam struggled from behind the arc, hitting only 3-of-16 from three-point range.
Butler led four San Diego players in double figures and also received excellent post play from center Malcolm Battles, who notched a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
The Slam return home to take on the Fresno Heatwave in a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday night. The Slam will be honoring Whatcom County's two high school state champion football teams during each game. Students from Meridian High School will receive $1 admission on Tuesday while Lynden High School students will get the same great deal on Wednesday. Tip-off for both games is set for 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
