PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In a matchup of two teams at the opposite ends of the standings, the Los Angeles Sol entered as the top team in Women's Professional Soccer but it was Sky Blue FC that put together a near-dominant performance. Sky Blue FC did everything right but put the ball in the back of the net settling for a 0-0 tie with the league leaders on a rainy night at Yurcak Field.
Sky Blue FC held a 14-5 advantage in shots and controlled the pace for much of the game. Both goalkeepers - Jenni Branam of Sky Blue FC and Karina LeBlanc of the Sol - finished the game with three saves. With the draw, Los Angeles now stands at 7-1-4 and has a seven-match unbeaten streak while Sky Blue FC is 2-5-3.
"We played New Jersey soccer today, getting down and dirty in the mud," said Sky Blue FC interim Head Coach Kelly Lindsey. "Our team was prepared for the conditions tonight - I thought they did very well with the weather. I give our team a lot of credit, there was a ton of passion and energy today and I think that they deserved the result. We would have liked a victory, but today was a moral victory for us."
Natasha Kai provided the home side with a number of close chances including the best opportunity of the game in the 15th minute. Kai ran onto a nice ball through from Kacey White and rolled a tantalizingly slow shot past LeBlanc and off the left post.
Branam was solid in net for Sky Blue FC touching a dangerous cross-turned-shot from Aly Wagner past the right post in the 11th minute and stuffing Wagner one minute after halftime. In the 59th minute, Branam made a nice diving grab at the left post off a long-distance shot from Shannon Boxx.
Sky Blue FC's best chances of the second half came off a wide by Natasha Kai in the 55th minute that went just wide left and a delicate chip from substitute Collette McCallum in the 72nd minute that floated just over the bar.
Sky Blue FC has little time to rest with a matchup against the Chicago Red Stars at Yurcak Field on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 888-SBFC-TIX or by visiting www.skybluestore.com.
