Sky Blue FC News Release
Sandy, Utah - Sky Blue FC (0-6-2, 2 points) looked to push for a late equalizer but the goal from Amy Rodriguez in the first half gave Utah Royals FC the 1-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Didi Haracic was called to action early in the 6th minute of the match. Utah forward Vero Boquete sent in a free kick that was dipping towards the right-hand corner, but the outstretched hand of Haracic sent the ball over the frame.
In the 11th minute of play, Boquete threaded a ball into Amy Rodriguez, putting her one-on-one with Haracic but she sent the shot wide. Minutes later, Rodriguez sprinted with the ball to open space in the middle of the field and sent a long-range shot to the back of the net to put Utah up 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Sky Blue's first opportunity to equalize came in the 27th minute as Savannah McCaskill sent in a dipping shot towards goal, just falling short of the foot of Paige Monaghan. Utah goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart was able to hold on as Monaghan collided with her on the play.
Defender Erica Skroski denied a potential shot on goal as she tracked back into the box to stop Amy Rodriguez with a perfectly timed slide tackle in the 33rd minute. With Utah on the attack again, Haracic made a diving save as Mallory Weber found open space on the left side of the field and sent a shot to the near post in the 36th minute.
With the first half coming to a close, Monaghan earned a free kick right outside Utah's box in stoppage time. Raquel Rodriguez stood over the ball and sent a curling shot towards the right post, but the diving Barnhart punched the ball away.
The second half of the match saw three big chances on goal by Sky Blue. In the 49th minute, Sabrina Flores sent the ball up the right side to Monaghan, who cut back a pass to McCaskill in front of goal. With a quick touch to put the ball on her right foot, McCaskill's shot ended up being deflected by Utah defender Gaby Vincent. In the 52nd minute Rodriguez beat three defenders on the right side of the field and sent a low shot to the far post. Barnhart's hand just tipped the ball away where Naho Kawasumi sent the deflection off the post. In the 53rd minute McCaskill took a shot from distance, almost chipping Barnhart but the ball hit off the top of the crossbar.
Rookie Sabrina Flores made her NWSL debut, getting the start at right back. Midfielder Elizabeth Eddy made her Sky Blue FC debut, entering the match in the 78th minute for McCaskill.
Sky Blue FC head back home to face the Orlando Pride at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. on June 22 at 7 p.m. ET when the club will have their Pride Night Celebration. Sky Blue will head to the Midwest to face the Chicago Red Stars at SeatGeek Stadium on July 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
