Sixth-Inning Home Runs Hand 'Hawks Loss

MODESTO, Calif. - The JetHawks saw the Modesto Nuts score four runs on three homers to break the game open in the sixth inning and couldn't find enough offense to respond in a 5-1 loss on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field.

David Hill (2-3) had allowed only one run through the first five innings for Lancaster (4-3, 37-40) before trouble found him in the sixth. With one out he solo home run to Evan White. Joe Rizzo followed with a double before Nick Zammarelli crushed a two-run home run. Gareth Morgan immediately followed with a solo shot to put the Nuts (1-6, 31-46) up, 5-1.

Hill left the game after a walk and finished with five earned runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out three and issued one walk.

The JetHawks were able to respond with a run in the seventh but nothing more. Colton Welker led off with a walk against starter Colin Rodgers (3-3), moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Joel Diaz single.

Rodgers would leave the game after the Diaz hit. The Nuts starter allowed one run on only three hits over 6.2 innings with a career-high seven strikeouts.

Steven Linkous went 4-for-4 in the game with a double and a stolen base but was left aboard each time he reached.

Manny Melendez went hitless to snap a 10-game hitting streak.

The win gave Modesto its first win since June 16 and snapped a seven-game losing streak.

The JetHawks will attempt to take three out of four in the series with a win in Thursday night's finale. Matt Dennis (4-8) is slated to start opposite Reggie McClain (2-5). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
