Sirens defense dominates home game against Scorchers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 23, 2003) – The Sacramento Sirens, Sacramento's professional women's full tackle football team, defeated the Santa Rosa Scorchers yesterday at Capital Christian High School by a final score of 67 - 6. The Sirens remain undefeated in 2003 with a current record of 3 – 0.

The Sirens were able to dominate the entire game with their explosive offense and dominating defense. The Sirens scored multiple times in each quarter with no response from the Scorchers until the fourth quarter. In the first quarter, the Sirens scored on a 22-yard rushing touchdown by HB Julie Wicher and a 43 yard pass from QB Channey Powers to HB Michelle Kahler. Both point-after kicks by Hilary McLaughlin were good to end the first quarter 14 - 0 Sirens.

In the second quarter, the Sirens continued to dominate with the defense recovering two Scorcher fumbles and returning the ball to the offense. A 3-yard run by FB Dana McIntyre and a 19-yard pass from QB Lelani Limary to TE Sarah Trobee rewarded the defense for their hard work. McLaughlin was able to convert one of the two point-after kicks attempted to end the half 27 – 0 Sirens.

In the third quarter, the Sirens defense forced the Scorchers to punt three times and return the ball to the Sirens offense. The Sirens capitalized on these punts by scoring three times in the quarter on a 4-yard rush by FB Lisa Giblin, a 4-yard rush by Wicher and a 1 yard rush by Limary. McLaughlin had one 2-point conversion and one point-after kick good to finish the quarter 47 – 0 Sirens.

In the fourth quarter, the Scorchers defense forced a Sirens fumble and the offense was able to score with 14:47 remaining in the quarter on a 25-yard run by Scorchers' FB Shea Cannon. The Scorchers' two point conversion attempt failed, keeping the score 47 – 6. Proving they weren't finished yet, the Sirens offense scored on the following drive with a 6-yard run by Giblin. McLaughlin's point-after kick was good, raising the score to 54 – 6. With 7:52 remaining in the game, the Sirens defense forced one more fumble and the offense drove down the field and scored on a 21-yard run by Kahler. McLaughlin's kick was good and increased the Sirens lead to 60 – 6. In their next possession, the Scorchers were forced to punt and Sirens HB Wicher returned the punt for 45-yards for a touchdown. McLaughlin's point-after kick failed, ending the game with a final score of 67 - 6.

The Sirens defense forced the Scorchers offense to turn the ball over 13 times including two interceptions, five fumbles, one turnover on downs and five punts. These costly turnovers enabled the Sirens offense to dominate the entire game. The Sirens rushing stats were impressive as well with 38 carries for 334 yards total. HB Julie Wicher led all backs with 138 total yards (59 yards rushing and 79 yards in punt returns), followed by HB Michelle Kahler with 82 yards in five attempts and FB Lisa Giblin with 71 yards on 9 attempts.

FINAL SCORE: SACRAMENTO SIRENS 67 - SANTA ROSA SCORCHERS 6

The Sirens have a bye week this week followed by two road games against the Oakland Banshees and Santa Rosa. The Sirens return home on April 26 to play the San Francisco StingRayz who look to avenge an earlier 62 – 26 loss in San Francisco. This game is Kid's Day where children and youth under 16 get in free.

Season Tickets are still available at all Sirens practices at 7:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Capital Christian High School or the day of the game. Season tickets are $75 for adults, $50 for seniors and students and $25 for youths age 10-18 and are valid for all 2003 home games plus free parking.
