Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

The Atlanta Silverbacks and Atlanta Silverbacks Women will play a double-header for the second straight weekend this Sunday, May 15 at DeKalb Memorial Stadium. The women's squad will kick-off the soccer marathon at 2:00pm against the Bradenton Athletics and the men will follow at 5:30pm against top of the table Richmond Kickers.

The female gorillas are coming off a big win in the first match in their history, a 4-3 victory against perennial W-League power Hampton Roads Piranhas. The Silverbacks had goals from Sara Steinmann, Marci Miller-Jobson, Melanie Schneider, and Kerry Gragg, all in the first half.

Atlanta (1 win - 0 draws - 0 losses) will face a Bradenton team playing its third match in four days. The Athletics (0-0-1) lost their season opener 2-0 last week to the Carolina Dynamo Women and will come to the gorillas' lair after another contest with Carolina on Thursday and a match at the Charlotte Lady Eagles on Friday night. The Bradenton women's squad is part of the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida, which include the famous Nick Bollettieri tennis academy, the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and baseball and basketball academies as well.

The Silverbacks men (3-1-1) will be looking for revenge against the Kickers, authors of Atlanta's only loss this season. The apes lost to the kangaroos 3-1 in the season opener at Richmond on April 16. Atlanta is fresh off Saturday's 3-2 win over the Toronto Lynx. The gorillas had goals from [scoring leader] Fabian Dawkins and Sergio Iñiguez, both courtesy of assists by Rodrigo Ríos. The Chilean's set up of both scores earned him a selection to the USL First Division's Team-of-the-Week, Atlanta's third in as many weeks.

Richmond (4-1-1) will roll into town on Sunday for their third match in five days. The first-place Kickers posted a 3-1 victory at home yesterday against the Virginia Beach Mariners will have a return leg at Virginia Beach on Friday before making the trip south to Atlanta. The red-and-white will look to derail the Silverbacks attack with in-form goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale. The Kickers are led by forward Matthew Delicate, who is tied with Atlanta's Dawkins for the league scoring lead with 5 goals. Atlanta will continue with the Dawkins-Ríos combo up front and look to league-saves-leader Christian Fegler to keep the visitors out of the Silverbacks net.
