The Atlanta Silverbacks announced today the signing of defender/midfielder David Hayes. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Hayes, from Waldorf, Maryland, joins Atlanta after spending the 2004 season with the Richmond Kickers. The 29-year old played in 26 games for the kangaroos, tallying 11 points and helping them to a successful run in the US Open Cup. Hayes began his professional career in 1999 with DC United of Major League Soccer, where he stayed through 2000. In 2001, he moved on to the Chicago Fire, recording his first professional goal against current Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Hayes' experience in the United Soccer Leagues also includes a tour in 2003 with the Rochester Rhinos, appearing in 28 matches and recording 11 points, his first stint with Richmond in 2002, tallying 18 points, and a stop with the Milwaukee Rampage in 2001, scoring six goals and recording six assists in 24 games. The 5'9", 160-lb. back played at Wingate University where he broke the school scoring record with 78 goals in two seasons. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at Charles County Community College, where he was named team MVP both years while breaking that school's goal scoring record with 104.

"I'm excited to be in Atlanta," said Hayes. "I respect coach David [Vaudreuil] and what he's doing with the Silverbacks organization. The players we have here can win a championship." Coach Vaudreuil added, "David is a guy that I know very well. We actually played together in Chicago and Milwaukee. He's a consummate professional with experience at the MLS level– he will come in and immediately give us leadership and fill very important roles at both left back and left midfield."

The Silverbacks will open the 2005 USL First Division season next week with three road games, traveling to Virginia to face the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, 16 April and the Virginia Beach Mariners the next day. Atlanta will then travel to the Charleston Battery on Saturday, 23 April before opening the home schedule with a return leg against the Black-and Gold on Saturday, April 30 at 5:30pm.
