
Silverbacks Host Timbers in Semi-Finals on Friday

On Friday night, the USL First Division's best offensive team - the Atlanta Silverbacks, and the league's best defensive team - the Portland Timbers, will square off in the semi-finals of the USL First Division playoffs at 7:55 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. The Silverbacks scored the most goals (40) of any team in the league during the regular season, while the Timbers allowed the least goals (18) of any team.
The Silverbacks will be attempting to make history for the third time in as many games on Friday night when they host the Timbers in the first leg of the semi-finals. Last Friday night the Silverbacks won the franchise's first postseason match when they beat the Rochester Rhinos 2-1 at home. The 'Backs went on to tie the Rhinos 1-1 on the road on Sunday night, bringing the franchise its first appearance in the USL First Division semi-finals. On Friday, the Silverbacks will look to bring the franchise its first ever semi-final win.
The semi-final round will be determined on a two-game aggregate goal series with the winner advancing to the USL Championship on Saturday, September 29. Atlanta's semi-final series will conclude on Sunday at 7:00 pm when the Silverbacks play Portland at PGE Park. The match will be broadcast nationally live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
The Silverbacks advanced past the Rhinos 3-2 on aggregate goals to advance to the semi-finals. The Timbers advanced past the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on aggregate goals to advance; the Timbers lost 1-0 on the road and won 3-0 at home.
The Silverbacks finished the regular season in fourth place with a 12-9-7 record while the Timbers finished in second place with a 14-5-9 record. The two teams met twice this season with only one goal being scored by either team in all 180 minutes. The Silverbacks lost 1-0 at home and the teams tied 0-0 in Portland.
