Silverbacks Close Road Trip Before Wednesday's Homecoming

August 1, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

The Atlanta Silverbacks are Indianapolis to face the Indy Eleven on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. | ESPN3), in the team's 16th matchup of the NASL combined season. The team enters fresh off of a win in Edmonton, hoping the momentum continues as the Silverbacks have collected points in three of their last four outings.

This game will be the first of another three-game, one-week stretch for the Silverbacks, as the team will play against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Wednesday and the San Antonio Scorpions next Saturday.

April 4 was the date of the first and only other matchup between the Silverbacks and Boys in Blue in 2015, the first match of the NASL Spring season. Both teams earned a point following a 1-1 draw that came down to the last few minutes, as the Eleven scored in the 90th minute to prevent the Silverbacks from earning 3 points in their home opener.

Steward Ceus shines again

In his second game back with the Silverbacks after his trip to the Gold Cup with Haiti came to an end, Steward Ceus played very well yet again. Ceus notched two saves versus FC Edmonton and also had an incredible stop reminiscent of a hockey goalie against FC Edmonton's Frank Jonke. To thwart Jonke's chances of putting the ball through his legs, Ceus got down on his knees and swatted the ball away, taking out Jonke in the process.

Two Silverbacks receive TOTW honors for 2nd week in a row

It seems as though the NASL Play of the Week honor wasn't enough for Jaime Chavez , as he and teammate Simon Mensing earned Team of the Week mentions for Week 4 of the Fall season after a 3-1 victory against FC Edmonton. Chavez scored goals in the 49th and 66th minutes while also assisting on a clinching goal by Shaka Bangura in the 88th minute.

Though the Silverbacks' offense is getting a lot of recognition lately, the defense is as sturdy as ever. Captain Mensing continues to provide a brick wall in the back, helping the club climb up the table and proving that the Silverbacks' back three is a force to be reckoned with.

Okafor on loan to Arizona United

Midfielder Jon Okafor is being loaned to Arizona United SC of the United Soccer League for one month after both sides completed a loan agreement. This will not be unchartered territory for Okafor, as the 25 year old appeared in 28 matches with Arizona United in 2014. In his 11 appearances with the Silverbacks, Okafor played 903 minutes and scored his lone goal against the Carolina RailHawks in Week 3 of the Spring season.

Another three-game week

Last week, the Silverbacks played three grueling games within an eight-day period, facing the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Saturday, Ottawa Fury FC on Wednesday, and FC Edmonton on Sunday. Starting this Saturday, the club will be playing another three games, but this time in a seven-day period. The three-game swing kicks off against the Indy Eleven and then the Silverbacks come home to face the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Wednesday and San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday.
