Silver Stars Training Camp Roster set for Sunday

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars begin their 2009 training camp Sunday, May 17, with 15 players vying for 11 roster spots.

The team will meet at 11 a.m., followed by practice on the court at Antioch Baptist Church Sports Complex and Community Center, 314 Eross St. Media Day is slated for Monday, May 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the AT&T Center.

With training camp starting a month later than it has in the past, the Silver Stars expect 14 of their 15 training camp players by Sunday with Bernadette Ngoyisa joining the team later to bring the number up to the 15-player limit set by the league.

The Silver Stars return the heart of their 2008 Western Conference Championship squad led by Sophia Young and Becky Hammon. With the league roster limit set at 11 this season, there will be a few battles for the final roster spots during camp.

Rookie draftees Megan Frazee and Candyce Bingham have arrived in preparation for camp, while the Stars' 26th selection Sonja Petrovic, a 6'1" Serbian National Team player, will stay overseas for the 2009 season with plans to join San Antonio in the future.

The Silver Stars also recently signed former Silver Stars Ngoyisa and Katie Feenstra Mattera, along with Australian guard Belinda Snell.

Practices during training camp will be at the Antioch Baptist Church Sports Complex and Community Center unless otherwise noted and are tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Practices are open to the media with Silver Stars players and coaches available for interviews following each practice session. Media members wishing to schedule interviews after practice should contact the Silver Stars media services staff.

The Silver Stars are set to play two pre-season games beginning with a May 30 WNBA Finals rematch with Detroit in Traverse City, Mich. On June 2, the squad will make the short trip up to Austin to take on the Indiana Fever at the Austin Convention Center. Five dollar general admission tickets to the Austin tilt are on sale now.

The defending Western Conference Champion Silver Stars open the 2009 season on the road at Phoenix before coming home to host the New York Liberty on Saturday, June 13 with plans to unveil the Western Conference Champions banner and dollar beer, soda and hot dogs on sale.
