Silver Stars Tipped by Indiana in Preseason Tilt

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars fell to the defending WNBA champion Indiana Fever, 80-75, in the preseason opener on Saturday afternoon at the AT&T Center. Guard Jia Perkins led the Silver Stars with 14 points while Danielle Robinson added 10 points. The Fever had four players score in double-digits, led by forward Tamika Catchings with had 17 points.

The Silver Stars won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Fever, 36-29, behind a team-best seven rebounds by Julie Wojta and five from 16th overall draft pick Davellyn Whyte. The rebounding advantage helped San Antonio take a 19-8 advantage in second-chance points.

San Antonio jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Indiana, 23-15, in the first quarter behind six points for Perkins and four from Danielle Adams off the bench. Indiana rallied, outscoring the Silver Stars by three, 19-16, in the second quarter to cut the deficit to five at halftime, 39-34.

The Silver Stars maintained their lead in a closely-contested third quarter, led by five points from Perkins and five points from former Baylor guard Jordan Madden off the bench. Indiana hit their stride in the fourth quarter, behind 11 points from guard Shavonte Zellous to earn the come-from-behind win.

San Antonio now heads to Indiana for the second half of the home-and-away series, tipping off against the Fever at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday, May 15 at 11 a.m. CT.

The Silver Stars waived guard Amber Stokes following the game.
