Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Advantage Sundogs- The Arizona Sundogs (8-4-3) gained the early advantage in their three-game series with the Allen Americans (10-2-1) thanks to a shootout victory on Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center. Derek LeBlanc and Jason Morgan scored regulation goals for Arizona and David Schlemko scored the game winner in the shootout. Arizona has now won five straight home games and the loss for Allen ended a four-game road win streak. Arizona trails Allen by two points for first place in the Berry Conference and the two teams finish out their series with game two on Friday night and game three on Saturday night.
2.) Fort Worth Rolling Along- The Brahmas (6-5-2) may have struggled to a 2-5-2 start to the season but that has all changed with a four-game win streak that has them sitting alone in sixth place in the Berry Conference. Fort Worth went 3-0 on their recently completed road trip that saw them win in Rapid City, Denver and Tulsa and then on Wednesday night, Fort Worth topped the Quad City Mallards in a shootout. The Brahmas have won with defense allowing just four total goals during their four-game streak. Forward Phil Fox, the reigning Oakley CHL Player of the Week, has scored the game winner in three of the four victories. The Brahmas are at Missouri (4-7-2) on Friday night and at Wichita (8-5-2) on Saturday.
3.) Millan Catching Stride- Denver goaltender Kieran Millan has turned around his record and his team's with maybe the best goaltending play in the CHL over the past two weeks. The rookie and former Boston University star has won three straight games allowing just two goals in those wins. Millan struggled to start the season going 1-3 in his first four decisions allowing 14 goals in those games. The Cutthroats won their first road game of the season in Rapid City on Wednesday night and go head-to-head against the Rush on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Millan has lowered his goals against average to 2.36, fifth in the league.
By the Numbers
4: The number of goals the Tulsa Oilers (6-8-1) have scored during their current three-game losing streak. Tulsa's offense has fallen to eighth in the league averaging 2.60 goals per game and their defense is next to last allowing 3.52 goals per game. Tulsa hosts Bloomington (8-4-1) on Friday and then travels to Quad City (5-4-3) on Saturday.
One-Timers
-The Quad City Mallards' power play has been suffering an outage lately connecting just once in their last 20 chances. On the season, they have scored just four goals in 45 chances (8.9%).
-Arizona forward Derek LeBlanc has been nothing short of brilliant since being acquired by the Sundogs from the Missouri Mavericks three weeks ago. In eight games with the Sundogs, LeBlanc has four goals and four assists and is a +3. In seven games with Missouri prior to the trade, LeBlanc had just two assists and was a -2.
-Allen's Kip Brennan was assessed 33 penalty minutes in Wednesday's game against Arizona accounting for the most by any player in a single game this season. On the year, he is third in the CHL with 51 PIM's.
-After losing his first game of the season, Quad City goalie John Murray has earned points in six straight games going 3-0-3 during that span. Murray has allowed just 14 goals during his point streak and for the season has a 2.32 GAA and a .927 save percentage.
-The Tulsa Oilers are the last team in the CHL to have not played in a shootout. The Oilers are 1-1 in overtime games but have yet to extend to the shootout round.
