June 16, 2015 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Tulsa Shock News Release
It was a total team effort today as the Tulsa Shock defeated the San Antonio Stars 88-61 at home in the BOK Center.
Thousands of young fans were in attendance for the annual Camp Day game, and the kids had plenty to cheer about as their hometown Shock won their fourth consecutive game of the season improving their record to 4-1 overall. It was also the fourth time the Shock have beaten the Stars this season - twice in pre-season and twice now during the regular season. Today's win was also the second of two wins in a row for the Shock verses their Western Conference rivals, having bested them two days ago in San Antonio (June 14).
The Shock was led once again by veteran Plenette Pierson, who scored 20 points in just over 21 minutes of playing time in a 9-for-13 shooting performance.
But the she had plenty of help.
The Shock bench accounted 41 points led by guard Riquna Williams' 16, which establish her new season high. Jordan Hooper had 11 points including two more three-pointers. Rookie Amanda Zahui B had her best outing yet as well adding 10 points, making five out of seven shots from the field, and also adding seven rebounds (six defensive) and one blocked shot. Vicki Baugh also had four points to add to the bench total.
Skylar Diggins scored 13 points, and had three assists and two blocks. Both Courtney Paris and Brianna Kiesel added six points - with Paris also grabbing another 13 boards (11 defensive) and Kiesel dishing out eight assists - which is the rookie's best so far in only her second career start in relief of the injured Odyssey Sims. In total, five Shock players scored in double-figures - making the team undefeated this season when four or more Shock players score at least 10 points in a game. It was the first time five had scored 10 or more in a game.
As a team the Shock outrebounded the Stars 43-25 in this game, and 100-51 over the last two games combined. The Stars were only 32-percent shooting for the game compared to the Shock's 50.7. The Shock's largest lead of the game was 30 points.
The Stars were led by Gia Perkins and Sophia Young-Malcolm who both scored 20 points in the game. Dearica Hamby was the next-highest Stars scorer with only seven. However, Danielle Adams, Sydney Colson, Brittany Hrynko and Jane Appel were all held scoreless in the game. Appel started for San Antonio.
The Shock's next game is this Friday, June 19 against the Mystics in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central Time and is being televised statewide on all Cox Communications channels. Please check your local listings for the channel number in your area.
