FRANCHISE LAUNCHES NEW BRACELET INITIATIVE
The WNBA Detroit Shock have introduced a new initiative to benefit fitness and literacy programs in the metro Detroit area. Fans can purchase Detroit Shock "Be Yourself" bracelets at each of the Shock's five remaining home games in The Palace west atrium or on the concourse outside the Cingular Club, starting this Sunday, August 7 when the Shock take on the New York Liberty at 7 p.m. at The Palace. The bracelets will sell for $2, with all proceeds going to the Palace Foundation for literacy purposes. Bracelets will be-on sale at the Palace Locker Room Store located inside The Palace and online immediately at www.detroitshock.com. Adult and youth sizes are available. FIVE-TIME ALL-STAR KATIE SMITH TO HOST YOUTH CLINIC
Detroit Shock All-Star guard Katie Smith will host a one-hour basketball clinic on Sunday, August 7 on The Palace floor prior to the Shock's 7 p.m. game against the New York Liberty. Palace Sports & Entertainment Director of Year Round Hoops, Aaron Smith will run the clinic, which will begin at 4:30 p.m. It will focus on "Fun and Fundamentals" as part of the WNBA Be Smart, Be Fit, Be Yourself Initiative. The event is open to the public for all participants of all ages. To sign-up to participate, please call the Shock Community Relations Department at 248-377-8738.
SHOCK HONOR EXTRAORDINARY TEENAGE GIRL
The Shock will honor 17 year-old Victoria Powell by presenting her with the "My Personal Heroes" Award prior to their home game against the New York Liberty on Sunday, August 7 at 7 p.m. Powell, who saved a woman from drowning in a pool in 2004, is an active senior at the Maumee Valley Girl Scout Council. She participates in the Studio 2B program, which offers teens a non-traditional form of Girl Scouting, while meeting the needs of today's teen. Newly acquired Shock guard and WNBA All-Star Katie Smith will present the award prior to tip-off.
