Shock Top Coaches Poll For 14th Straight Week
June 17, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - The Spokane Shock have maintained the No. 1 ranking of the Weekly Coaches Poll for a record-tying 14th straight week, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Spokane collected 383 points of the possible 384 and 23-of-25 first place votes coming off the club's 88-27 road win at Stockton. The Shock, who have won all 10 of their games this season, host intrastate and divisional foe Tri-Cities this Saturday at Spokane Arena. Spokane's current 14-week stay at the top is tied for the longest run at No. 1. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held the pole position for 14 weeks in 2007.
Tulsa (10-1, 356 points, 2 first place votes) remained at No. 2 after a 56-47 home victory against No. 7 Arkansas. The Talons have won nine straight games. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (9-3, 330 points) moved up to No. 3 this week on the strength of a 63-34 road victory against Manchester. Boise (9-2, 293 points) jumped one spot to No. 4 after defeating Tri-Cities, 56-21. The Burn have defeated the Fever in all three head-to-head meetings this season. Rounding out the Top-5 this week is Tennessee Valley (8-3, 292 points). The Vipers pushed South Division rival South Georgia out of the Top-5 by defeating the Wildcats on their home turf, 44-27. South Georgia slipped from No. 3 to No. 6 with the loss.
Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification. The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
