Shock Re-Signs Two-Time WNBA Champion Elaine Powell

Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today that the Shock has re-signed two-time WNBA Champion Elaine Powell, and added former Shock first round pick Dionnah Jackson to the team's training camp roster. Per team policy, financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Powell, 31, was the starting point guard on the Shock's 2003 WNBA Championship team and a key reserve on the 2006 Championship squad. Entering her ninth WNBA season, Powell ranks 11th on the career assist list in the history of US women's professional basketball, and sports career averages of 7.5 points, 3.2 assists and 1.27 steals per game.
Powell was originally drafted 50th overall in the 1999 WNBA draft by the Orlando Miracle. The Shock acquired her in a 2002 trade along with a 2003 first round draft pick in exchange for Wendy Palmer and a second round pick. The Chicago Sky selected Powell in the 2006 WNBA Expansion Draft, but waived her prior to the end of the season. She re-signed with Detroit for their second championship run.
The signing of Dionnah Jackson reunites the 5-9 guard from Oklahoma with the Shock. Detroit originally selected Jackson in the first round (No. 13 overall) in the 2005 WNBA Draft. She played in all three of Detroit's preseason games in 2005 before being waived on May 19, 2005. In 2006, Jackson spent time in the Sacramento Monarch's training camp.
Jackson averaged 14.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 2.17 steals and 32.8 minutes per game while shooting 45.3% (158-349 FG) from the field during her senior season at Oklahoma. She was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and earned Big 12 Tournament MVP honors in 2004.
