Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month Named
September 30, 2015 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
TORONTO - Henry Burris, Chris Rainey and Jamaal Westerman were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month for September of the CFL's 2015 season.
Performer of the Month includes all appearances from Week 11 to Week 14.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
QB | HENRY BURRIS | OTTAWA REDBLACKS
Ottawa REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris had a stellar September, racking up 1,107 passing yards and 65 rushing yards over three games with a 66% completion rate.
He notched 477 passing yards and two touchdowns against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on September 19th. This performance earned Burris a nod as a Shaw Top Performer for Week 13.
Burris has been a difference-maker for Ottawa: a stable quarterback who can help them win games: their win over Saskatchewan marked the first time the new franchise has ever won three games in a row.
His 317 passing yards against BC on September 13th were good enough for another win. And although Ottawa lost to divisional rivals Toronto on September 26th, Burris threw for 313 yards and chipped in with another 18 on the ground.
The Spiro, Oklahoma native currently leads the league in passing yards with 3,611. He averages 300.92 yards per game and is on pace to reach over 5,000 yards this season.
Burris is now tied for the lead in Shaw CFL Top Performer Points Leaderboard with 420 points with Zach Collaros.
RB | CHRIS RAINEY | B.C. LIONS
B.C. Lions return man Chris Rainey recorded 729 combined-return yards and returned two plays for touchdowns in the Lions' three games in September.
The 5'8" returner had a career game in Week 13 against the Calgary Stampeders. Rainey returned a punt 103 yards for a touchdown as well as a 103-yard kickoff in the Lions loss in Calgary. In total Rainey accumulated 333 total yards. His performance led to him being named a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week for Week 13.
The University of Florida product became only the fourth CFL player to have returned a punt and kickoff for touchdowns in the same game.
A week earlier, he nearly ran a kickoff back against the Ottawa REDBLACKS before he was tripped up inside the five yard line after a 98-yard return.
This season Rainey leads the league in punt return yards and has the highest kickoff return average (31.1).
DE | JAMAAL WESTERMAN | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS
Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Jamaal Westerman was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Month for September.
In the Bombers' four September games, Westerman tallied 14 tackles and four sacks for the Blue Bombers in the month of September.
The Brooklyn, New York native recorded a pair of sacks against the Calgary Stampeders in Week 14 at Investors Group Field. His pair of sacks on Bo Levi Mitchell accumulated a loss of 13 yards.
The Rutgers University product recorded four tackles and a sack in Week 12 win over the Blue Bombers' rivals, Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Westerman currently leads the league in sacks with 11 and is tied for third on the Bombers with 46 tackles.
