New York Sharks News Release

The New York Sharks of the Independent Women's Football League defeated the Chicago Force by the score of 40-0 in Jamaica, Queens this Saturday.

The Sharks were winners of the IWFL Mid Atlantic Conference with an 8-0 record and were facing the wildcard team and divisional rival Chicago Force who finished with a 6-2 mark. It was supposed to be a defensive battle as the two teams combined have 10 shutouts.

The New Yorkers got on the board quickly when quarterback Val Halesworth hit wide receiver Kathy Holloman for a 94-yard touchdown pass play in the beginning of the first quarter. The Sharks struck again by going to the air when Halesworth connected on a sideline pass to receiver Karen Mulligan. Chicago seemed to not notice the receiver who ran down the sidelines for a 39-yard touchdown.

The Sharks continued to go to the air and scored again on a 55-yard pass from Halesworth to receiver Dana Sparling in the third quarter.

With Chicago falling behind early, they switched from their powerful running game to a passing attack. With Shark lineswomen teeing off, they continually harrassed and sacked the Chicago quarterback. It was New York's fifth shutout of the season.

By the end of the game, the Sharks had won their first playoff round and will now face the Tampa Bay Terminators for the IWFL Eastern Conference Championship. The game will be held on Saturday, July 10th at August Martin High School in Jamaica, Queens. Kickoff is at 5pm (EDT). General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. The game will also be broadcast on the radio by KEDU-FM 102.3 in Ruidoso, New Mexico and over the Internet at www.kedu.us.

The winner of this game will go on to the IWFL Championship game to be played on July 26th in Sacramento, California.
