Sharks Hand Honu First Loss

The last remaining undefeated team in the Hawaii Winter Baseball league, the North Shore Honu, fell to the Honolulu Sharks tonight, 2-1, at Maui's Iron Maehara Stadium.

Honolulu (2-2) starting pitcher Jimmy James (1-0) turned in a stellar performance, allowing just one hit and no runs in five innings while notching five strikeouts. Kris Medlen picked up his first save of the young HWB season after striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. On the evening, Sharks pitchers combined to strike out 13 Honu batters.

The Sharks scored a lone run in both the first and fourth innings thanks to RBIs from Shoji Ohiro and Ryan Harvey.

North Shore (3-1) mustered just four hits on the evening, as Michael Griffin and Mat Gamel notched two base knocks apiece. Honu starter Andrew Cruse (0-1) took the loss after allowing both Shark runs on four hits in 3.1 innings.

The teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow at Maehara Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
