Waikiki BeachBoys News Release
The Waikiki BeachBoys evened their record Hawaii Winter Baseball record at 2-2 after posting a three-run ninth inning and hanging on for the 8-6 victory over the West Oahu CaneFires (1-3) tonight at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Josh Womack clutched up and blooped a single into short right field that scored Jermaine Mitchell from third base give the Waikiki BeachBoys its first lead of the evening, 6-5. With ensuing batter Hector Pellot at the dish, CaneFires catcher Kenly Jansen uncorked a wild throw down to third base in an attempt to nail a stealing Justin Sellers, and the ball sailed into left field. As Sellers trotted home, left fielder Jamie Hoffman booted the ball which rolled to the outfield fence for the second error on the same play, and allowed Womack to come home as well.
Trailing 8-5 in the home half of the ninth frame, West Oahu made a valiant comeback attempt, but could only muster one run. The CaneFires stranded two runners in scoring position, however, as Hoffman went down on strikes.
Waikiki outfielder Michael Wilson led the offensive charge, going 2-3 with 2 RBIs on the evening including a monstrous solo home run in the fourth inning which landed an estimated 450 feet away over the centerfield fence.
The same two squads will play the rubber match of this three-game series tomorrow evening at Hans L'Orange. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
