Rochester RazorSharks News Release
Rochester turned a four point halftime lead into a 30 point victory in its regular season Premier Basketball League finale, defeating Kentucky 116-86. A crowd of 8,917 was the fourth largest in franchise history. Three of those four crowds came this year.
The win was the RazorSharks tenth in their last twelve games and clinches third place in the seven team PBL. The Sharks host the first game of a best-of-three semifinal playoff series with Quebec next Saturday.
Mike Williams and Eric Walton scored ten points each in an uninspired first half of play that saw Rochester lead Kentucky 55-51. The Sharks came out on fire in the second half led by Keith Friel. Friel hit three three pointers and scored 13 of his 18 points in the third quarter alone. Rochester pulled away to an 87-71 lead after three.
The Sharks outscored the Bluegrass Stallions 29-15 in the fourth quarter to win by 30. Friel's alter-ego Todd McCoy scored his PBL career high 22 points to lead the way. Walton added 19. Williams scored 18 points in an impressive finish to the regular season.
"We're done with this now," said Coach Rod Baker. "This is over. It's absolutely over. We have six chances to win four games (in the playoffs) and we can't get to four until we get one."
The top four teams in the PBL advance to the playoffs. Rochester as the third seed plays the second seeded Quebec Kebs. The series opens at the Blue Cross Arena. It will be decided in Quebec.
Rochester has won two of the first three PBL titles. The Sharks lost in the finals to Lawton-Fort Sill in 2010. The Cavalry (17-2) are the top seed with a game left to play. LFS opens against either Halifax (9-9) or Saint John (8-9).
