Sharks a Win Away Again

They were in the same spot last year. Up a game in the best-of-three Premier Basketball League championship series headed to Oklahoma. Last year the Rochester RazorSharks lost twice at Lawton-Fort Sill. They'll try to fix that this season.

Rochester took game one 105-101 before a crowd of 8,407. it was the fourth time this season the team drew over 8000.

The Sharks led the Cavalry by 16 points early in the third quarter. They had to withstand a 22-2 run by Lawton and still managed to lead after three 77-74. It took character along with a 44-15 edge in free throws taken, a stat that Cavalry coach Michael Ray Richardson complained long and loud about after the game.

LFS had an 11-10 lead early in the first. Rochester scored a 31 point second quarter and led by as many as 18 at 56-38. The Cavalry matched those 31 points in the third quarter by hitting 8 of their first 9 shots. The Cavs wound up shooting 14 for 19 and led by as many as four 70-66. The Sharks made seven free throws to the end of the quarter including two by Melvin Council with no time left, to reclaim the lead.

Lawton led only one more time, 83-82 after a three-point basket by Shawn Fountain. Rochester managed eight of the next 10 points to go ahead by five at 90-85. The Sharks kept the pressure on to lead by as many as ten with under 1:30 Left, and hang on for a four point win. The Cavs missed 5 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes to contribute to their own demise.

Sammy Monroe led the Sharks with 21 often times spectacular points. Melvin Council added 19. Mike Williams had 11 rebounds. For Lawton, guard Eddie Smith scored 23 on 10 of 17 shooting.

So the series moves to Oklahoma for game two on Sunday. Game three is Monday if necessary. The Cavs saw their 34 game home court win streak snapped by Halifax in the PBL semifinals last week. Rochester is 0-6 at Lawton all-time.
