Washington Kastles News Release
Comeback Queen Serena Rallies in 3 Straight Singles Matches
Serena Williams (singles), Martina Hingis (doubles) and Anastasia Rodionova (mixed) have reached the French Open quarterfinals, keeping the Kastles in contention for three titles on the red clay courts of Paris.
The top-ranked Williams has refused to lose throughout the tournament, rallying from a set down in three straight rounds.
After edging Anna-Lena Friedsam, Williams trailed 6-3, 4-2 in her third-round showdown with 2010 Kastle and former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. Behind powerful strokes and serves, the two-time French Open champion won 10 of the last 12 games to emerge with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Then, on Monday, Williams was three points from elimination against 2014 Kastle Sloane Stephens. Yet it didn't feel like a surprise when Williams muscled past Stephens for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win.
Williams is 16-3 overall versus Azarenka, 5-1 head-to-head with Stephens and 8-0 against her quarterfinal opponent on Wednesday, No. 17 seed Sara Errani.
But when Williams and Errani met on red clay earlier this spring, the Italian nearly pulled off an upset. Errani served for their Fed Cup match at 6-4, 5-4 before Williams mounted another of her trademark comebacks, winning 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3.
While Williams' road to the singles quarterfinals has been winding, Hingis hasn't dropped a set en route to the women's doubles quarterfinals.
She and Sania Mirza improved to 21-3 on the season by beating former World No. 1 Roberta Vinci and her new partner Karin Knapp 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
Next up for the No. 1 seeds is a marquee match against Australian Open champions Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova. Mattek-Sands and Safarova defeated Hingis and Mirza 6-7(5), 6-3, [11-9] on red clay last month in Madrid.
Mattek-Sands is also opposing a Kastle in the mixed doubles quarterfinals. She and Mike Bryan, the No. 2 seeds, will meet Rodionova and first-time partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi on Tuesday afternoon.
Rodionova and Qureshi, a member of the California Dream, upset two-time Grand Slam champions Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor 6-4, 6-3 to qualify for the Elite Eight.
Not as fortunate was the Kastles dream team of Hingis and Leander Paes. Katarina Srebotnik and Horia Tecau dashed Paes' dreams of a career Grand Slam 6-7(6), 6-3, [10-6]. Paes also lost his Round-of-16 match in men's doubles with Nestor.
