Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON â The Binghamton Senators are pleased to announce that the organization helped raise $40,449 for local charities and youth groups during the 2004-05 American Hockey League season. Among the many organizations benefiting from the Senators' contributions were the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York and the Day Nursery Association.
B-Sens players helped raise $10,200 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the largest single fundraiser of the season on March 6th. Players served spaghetti for nearly 300 people at the Holiday Inn Arena in the association's first annual Spaghetti on Ice Dinner.
Earlier in the season, the players got creative for a plate auction that raised $3,946 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. The players gathered at The Clay Ground in Vestal in late October to decorate the white bisque plates that were then auctioned during Senators' home games in November.
"Our organization strives to be more than simply an entertainment venue in the community," said Tom Mitchell, the Senators executive vice president of operations. "We have an opportunity to contribute in many other ways and we have been successful in doing so and will continue to look for new ways and opportunities to help out where we can."
Several game-night activities at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena also helped raise money for local youth groups and hockey teams. The chuck-a-puck, slap-shot den and prize wheel combined to raise more than $9,000 for the Southern Tier Hockey Association and the Binghamton Blizzard girls' hockey team among other youth groups.
The Senators also contributed to the community in several non-monetary ways during the 2004-05 season. Players made a total of 24 school visits throughout Broome County, visited and promoted American Red Cross blood drives and participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk in October.
