Manitoba Moose News Release
Jimmy Roy scored with 3:12 remaining in the third period and Wade Flaherty turned aside 25 shots as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rochester Americans 2-1 to grab a 3-1 series lead in the North Division Final. The Moose have a chance to wrap the series up Friday at the MTS Centre where the Upper Bowl will be open. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Just like Monday's game, Rochester got on the board first. Daniel Paille banged home a rebound from the right side of the net after Wade Flaherty stopped Paul Gaustad's initial shot.
The Moose tied it up at the period's 12:09 mark while on the powerplay. Lee Goren intercepted an Amerks pass from in front of the net and rifled it high glove behind Miller.
Jeff Heerema had a chance to pull the Moose ahead on a wraparound attempt but Miller was able to come across and stop the shot.
After one period, shots were 8-7 Moose as the two teams were tied 1-1 going into the first intermission.
Manitoba ratcheted up the pressure in the early stages of the second period. Lee Goren's shot from the left side of the net slipped through the crease.
Josh Green also came close to scoring. He blasted a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that Miller stopped. Morrison almost got a handle on the loose rebound.
The play for most of the period was even between both clubs as action shifted up and down ice.
Alex Burrows tipped a shot in front that went off Miller's shoulder and wide. On that same play, Jeff Jillson tripped Nathan Smith, putting the Moose on another powerplay.
On the ensuing man advantage, the closest the Moose came was when Josh Green rang a shot off the post.
After two periods, the Moose were ahead in shots 18-15.
Flaherty came up huge early in the third as the Amerks began the period on the powerplay after a Justin Morrison infraction late in the second. Derek Roy flicked a shot and the veteran netminder was able to get a blocker on it. Flaherty came up big again on the same shift, turning away Taylor with a right pad save.
Just as the penalty expired, Ryan Kesler broke in alone but was held from behind by Rochester's Nathan Paetsch setting the stage for another Moose powerplay. The best chance on this powerplay came when Peter Sarno was unable to jam the puck in from the side after Goren took the initial shot.
Flaherty made a huge stop midway through the third off Milan Bartovic, extending his blocker out to turn aside his blast from the slot.
Manitoba came close to breaking the stalemate with less than five minutes to play in the third. First, Kesler broke in behind the Amerks defenders but shot high over the net and then Goren almost picked up a loose puck during a wild scramble in front.
The Moose finally did break the deadlock with 3:12 to go in the period. Jimmy Roy received a pass across the slot from Burrows and one-timed it past Miller to make it a 2-1 game.
Rochester pressured late but the Moose defenders did not break. Manitoba was given a reprieve when Derek Roy received two minutes for hooking with 1:10 to play in the game. The Moose were able to weather the storm and hold on for the victory.
