San Diego Riptide News Release
FRESNO â The San Diego Riptide (1-1) used a 30-point second quarter scoring burst to earn their first victory in franchise history 69-52 over the Fresno Frenzy (0-2) Thursday evening.
Riptide QB Kane Claunch completed 13-of-22 passes for 219 yards with 7 TDs, a passer rating of 113.5 and ran in another score en route to Game MVP honors.
San Diego went ahead 27-24 on a 33-yard pass from Claunch to Altie Parker with 10 minutes left in the second quarter and Riptide never looked back, going on a 23-point scoring spree to jump to a 43-24 lead late in the second quarter. The teams traded scores in the final 30 seconds of the first half to head into the locker room with 82 points on the board (San Diego 50, Fresno 32).
Fresno's Lamont Webb opened the game with a 55-yard kickoff return and nabbed a 39-yard touchdown on the Frenzy's following possession to propel them to a 13-7 lead. Claunch tied it up when he connected with Mark Butler on a seven-yard pass.
Last week's go-to receiver, Marty Graham, quietly compiled 256 all-purpose yards and has 656 all-purpose yards in just two games played this season. He scored just once, on a 17-yard pass from Claunch, which accounted for all the scoring in the third quarter for either side.
Mark Butler and Jason Burke each scored twice, with Rico Curtis, Melvin Blue, Graham Parker and Claunch adding one apiece. In all, eight different Riptide players scored TDs on the night. Curtis also led all defenders with seven tackles and forced a fumble.
The Riptide ground game racked up 72 yards (30 Arena yards rushing equates to about 100 in the NFL) and scored three times.
The Riptide return to the Sports Arena Saturday, April 20 when they take on the Tulsa Talons at 7:00 pm. The Talons finished 13-3 last season and are led by former Iowa Barnstormer QB Anthony Buich, who flung 58 TDs last season with a 113.6 passer rating.
