Second Place Icehawks Best K-Wings 3-2 At McMorran Arena

PORT HURON, Mich. - The Port Huron Icehawks soared to their fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday as they defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 3-2 at McMorran Arena.

With the victory, the second place Icehawks improved their record to 34-28-1-2 and cushioned their lead over several of their International Hockey League rivals. They currently hold 71 points in the standings and lead third place Flint by five points and both Kalamazoo and Muskegon by six points.

The Icehawks lit the lamp first when Jamie Lovell scored at 4:30 in the first period on assists from Donnie Margettie and Kris Vernarsky. With the goal, Lovell extended his goal streak to three games.

The Icehawks held onto a 1-0 lead until early in the second stanza when Jamie Vanderveeken took advantage of a K-Wings 5-on-3 and shot a puck past Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling. Five minutes later, Kalamazoo scored again, this time shorthanded, to pull out to a 2-1 lead.

Port Huron answered back midway through the second period, however, as Jeff Zehr and Kris Vernarsky both chipped in goals just over a minute apart. Vernarsky's goal came on the Kalamazoo power play and marked the forward's fourth shorthanded tally of the season, which leads the team. Neither team scored in the third period.

The Icehawks outshot the K-Wings 31-25 in the victory. Sterling turned away 26 of 28 shots between the red pipes for Port Huron, while former Icehawk Ron Vogel stopped 28 of 31 shots.

Port Huron converted on just one of eight power play opportunities, while Kalamazoo was 1-7 on the power play in a game that saw the whistle blow for a total of 20 penalties and 54 penalty minutes.

The Icehawks will look to continue their winning streak on Friday when they host the first place Fort Wayne Komets. They conclude the weekend with a tilt at Muskegon on Sunday.

Game Notes...With a goal and an assist, Vernarsky extended his point streak to three games...The third period saw former teammates become rivals, as Jeff Zehr dropped his gloves to fight with former Icehawks Mark Nebus.
