FC Edmonton News Release
OTTAWA, ONT (April 22, 2015) - Second-half substitutes yet again made the difference in a 3-1 comeback win for FC Edmonton over Ottawa Fury on Wednesday, April 22 in the preliminary first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa striker Oliver opened the score for the home team, while Daryl Fordyce, Lance Laing and Tomi Ameobi answered late in the second half for the visiting Eddies.
FC Edmonton did not make it easy for themselves as just seconds into the match, Oliver put the Fury up front 1-0 with a hard shot into the bottom corner off a long throw in from the near side of the pitch. Oliver's one-time volley could not be stopped by FC Edmonton's goalkeeper Matt VanOekel.
The visiting side held their share of possession in the half, but Ottawa's high pressure made it difficult for the Eddies to create opportunities on net. The first 45 minutes ended with a 1-0 scoreline in favour of Ottawa Fury FC.
The course of the match changed in the 59th minute when Edmonton head coach Colin Miller brought Laing into the match. Minutes after coming on, the converted midfielder took a free kick that sailed just wide of Fury goalkeeper Romuald Peiser's net. Moments later, Laing saw his penalty kicked saved by Peiser to keep Ottawa in the lead.
Daryl Fordyce, also a second-half substitute, levelled the score 1-1 in the 83rd minute when he was able to collect a rebound off of a Tomi Ameobi shot from distance. The Eddies struck again in the 88th minute and this time Laing put Edmonton up 2-1 after intercepting an errant pass from the Ottawa back line.
The Eddies were not finished there. Laing was once again instrumental in Edmonton's late attack in extra time, sending a cross to teammate Ameobi, who ran onto the ball and scored to make the final tally 3-1 for the Eddies.
"Our play merited the win," Miller said. "We scored three very good goals and our substitutions have worked really well for us. Daryl was terrific when he came on; Laing was great. We will go into Wednesday starting at 0-0, and we will make sure that we are at our very best."
With a bye week in NASL action, Edmonton's next match will be against Ottawa in the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championships, April 29 at 8:00 p.m. MT at Clarke Field.
