
Second half comeback gives Steelheads fourth straight win

YAKIMA, Wash. (January 30, 2004) - The Steelheads scored the last five points Friday night to come away with an exciting 107-103 victory over the Yakima Sun Kings at the Yakima Valley Sun Dome.
The Steelheads won their fourth straight game while earning 5.0 quarter points. The Steelheads (18-13) also won their third straight road game. They also held on to third place as Sioux Falls lost to Idaho. Yakima fell to 7-24.
Shelly Clark hit a turnaround jumper with 28 second left to give the Steelheads a 104-103 lead. After a Sun Kings' turnover, Jemeil Rich was fouled and he made both free throws to put the Steelheads up 106-103 with 21 second left. Yakima took a time out, but Cory Hightower missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer. Gary got the rebound and David Graves was fouled with 5 seconds left. He made the second of two free throws for the final margin of victory.
Marshall Phillips, who signed with the Steelheads on Thursday, scored a team-high 24 points. Immanuel McElroy scored 22. Rich recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 assists. Clark had 12 points and seven rebounds. Aki Thomas and Graves added 10 points each. Galen Young had eight rebounds.
Yakima's Anthony Goldwire led six Sun Kings in double-digit scoring with a game-high 27 points. Marcus Hicks had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Pig Miller scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds.
The Steelheads came alive in the third quarter, outscoring Yakima 33-23 to tie the game at 82-82 after three.
The Steelheads fell behind early and never led in the first half. Yakima led 59-49 at the half. Yakima made 13 of 17 field goals in the first quarter (76 percent) and took the opening quarter, 35-26. The Sun Kings jumped out to an 18-8 lead and led by as many as 12.
Phillips had a fast start in his Steelheads debut. The 6-foot-5 guard scored 13 of his 15 first half points in the first quarter. McElroy had 10 points at the half. The Steelheads opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run and closed to 42-40 on a Galen Young put back with 7:21 left. Yakima went on an 8-0 run to take a 52-40 lead. Goldwire's basket with 1:10 left in the half gave the Sun Kings a 59-47 lead and a 24-21 quarter lead. McElroy's field goal with 37 seconds left closed the Steelheads to 24-23 on the quarter score. The Steelheads missed a couple of chances to take the quarter as time ran out.
