SeaWolves Crush Ducks on Friday Night

The SeaWolves opened their final series of the season with a convincing 14-4 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Friday night at Canal Park.

Erie jumped ahead in the first inning against Ducks starter Will Roberts. Jamie Johnson walked to start the game and Dixon Machado extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a knock. A double steal put the runners in scoring position. Johnson scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. With Machado on third, Dean Green grounded to short and on a throwing error, reached safely, scoring Machado for a 2-0 lead.

Akron tied up the game in the last of the second against Erie starter Jeff Ferrell. Bryan LaHair led off with a single and was tripled home by Joe Wendle making it 2-1. Bryson Myles singled home LaHair, tying the game.

The Ducks grabbed the lead in the fourth. Wendle doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Jordan Smith double making it 3-2.

The SeaWolves broke the game open in the seventh against reliever Enosil Tejeda . Corey Jones got the inning start with a bunt single. Aaron Westlake singled and Francisco Martinez walked to load the bases for Craig Albernaz . Albernaz lifted a single to left, scoring Jones, tying the game. With one out, Machado singled to center, scoring two runs for a 5-3 Erie advantage. Devon Travis followed with a knock, reloading the bases for Green. Green unloaded on a ball over the wall in center for his ninth home run and second grand slam of the year, giving Erie a 9-3 edge.

After Akron put up one in the bottom of the seventh, the "˜Wolves added to the lead in the eighth. Westlake led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Johnson singled home Westlake for a 10-4 lead. Following a Machado single, Travis tripled home the baserunners for a 12-4 lead.

In the top of the ninth with Steven Moya on first and one out, Westlake crushed a ball over the wall in left-center for a 14-4 lead. The home run for Westlake was his 15th.

Ferrell (10-9) earned the win allowed four runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

Chad Smith retired the final seven batters of the game in relief of Ferrell.
