Seals open skating academy

[CELEBRATION, Fla.] - The Florida Seals, of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), are adding more community involvement to their already busy schedule. The Seals Skating Academy has named Jean Claude Detre the Director.

Detre will run the day-to-day operations of the academy as well and be a main instructor on figure skating activities in the Seals Skating Academy. Detre has been performing, coaching, organizing and consulting in the figure skating world for over 25 years.

As a professional, Detre was a four time National Gold Medalist in both single and pair competitions. In addition he has coached and choreographed for many world class figure skaters including Scott Hamilton.

"We are really excited to have a high caliber academy at the Silver Spurs Arena," said Osceola Heritage Park General Manager Don Miers. "It will be such an asset to the building to have a high level of local, national and international skaters based out of Osceola County."

In addition to figure skating, the Seals Skating Academy will also include hockey instruction. Florida Seals Director of Hockey Operation Garry Unger will spend many hours on the ice with area youth.

Unger, known as the National Hockey League's "Iron Man" played in over 900 consecutive games. After retiring he went into coaching minor league hockey, excelling while working with the hockey stars of tomorrow.

"I feel it is really important that the Seals and the Silver Spurs Arena provide a great program for Central Florida's youth," said Seals General Manager Chris LiPuma. "There are not many facilities in the area for skaters to participate and I think we will have some of the best instructors in the world here in Kissimmee."
