Florida Seals News Release
[CELEBRATION, Fla.] â The Florida Seals of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) were represented by Head Coach Tommy Stewart at the league meetings on Thursday. Stewart participated in the SPHL expansion draft, along with the Pee Dee franchise, and grabbed rights to nine players, the maximum allowed.
The Seals Head Coach took some many familiar faces that he has had under his tutelage the past two seasons as the bench boss in Macon. The roster is shaping up to have a championship caliber team on the ice.
The first four players drafted by the Seals were center David Deeves, left wing Steve Zoryk, left wing Ryan Rivard and defenseman Art Mnatasakanov. All fours of those players had been announced as Seals members in May at the team's open house.
"I am very happy to get those four players confirmed as Seals property," said Stewart, "For the past two seasons I have coached these four guys and expect them to be leaders for the Seals this season."
In addition Stewart drafted five more players, four of whom he has coached before. The Seals expect to have forward Craig Miller, defenseman Casey Handrahan, defenseman Billy Rochefort, goalie Terry Denike and swingman Dominick Dawes.
"I am very happy with the way the draft turned out," said Stewart, "The team is in no way set but we have a good base of players already. Now I can look forward to contacting other players and get the full camp roster in place over the next couple months."
Central Florida will be excited as hockey returns this fall. Stewart is one of the best young coaches in the games today. In two seasons he has compiled a 66-43-6 records including trips to the leagues finals both years. His players are highly respected as 14 of his 17 Trax players were taken in the SPHL expansion draft.
