SD Loyal Draws Seattle Sounders FC in Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup
April 6, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release
San Diego - San Diego Loyal SC has an opponent for the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Coach Nate Miller's team will travel to the Pacific Northwest to face Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer in a Third Round match of the national competition that pairs teams from every level of play into a single elimination tournament.
SD Loyal drew Seattle Thursday afternoon during U.S. Soccer's live draw that aligned teams based on the Pacific region. This will be the first time SD Loyal will face Seattle and the second time it faces an MLS club in an official competition. After the introduction of teams from Major League Soccer into the Third Round of the Open Cup, SD Loyal's road trip to Seattle will take place on Wednesday, April 26 at a to-be-determined location.
SD Loyal is coming off a 2-0 Second Round Open Cup win against Albion San Diego Wednesday night atop the SDSU Sports Desk. Charlie Adams and Evan Conway scored to help send their team to the Third Round while 16-year-old Duran Ferree recorded the clean sheet in goal.
The 2023 edition of the competition will be the second time SD Loyal plays against an MLS side in the Third Round. The club played to a 1-0 defeat against LA Galaxy in Carson in 2022.
Miller's team will be balancing Open Cup play amid its fourth season in the USL Championship. SD Loyal will have a home match against Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sunday, April 23 (3 p.m.) before traveling to Seattle. Three days later, SD Loyal will return to Torero Stadium to host Western Conference rival El Paso Locomotive FC on Saturday, April 29 (7 p.m.).
In the meantime, SD Loyal returns to league play on Saturday as it hosts Eastern Conference foe FC Tulsa at 2 p.m. Tickets to the match are available now starting at just $15 at sdloyal.com/tickets.
