Cape Breton Eagles News Release
VAL-D'OR- The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have won two games in a row closing in on the end of a season long road trip. The Eagles topped the Foreurs 4-1 in Val-d'Or on Friday night.
The early going saw the Eagles outchance the Foreurs, outshooting the home side 17-9 in the opening period. Val-d'Or's Jonathan Lemieux and Cape Breton's Kyle Jessiman turned aside every shot. One of the best opportunities was not on goal at all, coming when the Foreurs Médérick Racicot rang a shot off the post.
In the opening five minutes of the middle stanza, both teams would find their first goals. Declan Smith would give the visitors the lead, shooting around Karl Boudrias in a one on one and putting a shot on the inside of the post past Lemieux at the 2:53 mark. Less than two minutes later it would be a tie game as Nicolas Ouellet sped up the right wing, and swept around the crease to beat Kyle Jessiman for a highlight reel goal.
However the Screaming Eagles would finish the period in the lead on a goal that came with just 1:45 to play. Egor Sokolov set up behind the net, and found Phélix Martineau in front at the top of the crease as the Eagles went up 2-1. Halfway through the third stanza the lead would be padded after a goal mouth scrum. Mathias Laferriere kicked the puck towards the goal and in a scramble Isiah Campbell would swat it into the twine and it was a 3-1 score for Cape Breton.
Shortly after the goal the Eagles would find themselves in penalty trouble as Kyle Havlena was sent off for slashing. The Foreurs were unable to score on the man advantage but just after the Screaming Eagles finished killing the penalty off, Shaun Miller fired the puck out of play and was given two minutes for delay of the game.
For the second consecutive time Cape Breton was able to kill off the minor, and would soon find themselves on their seventh power play of the evening. The man advantage would come through as Martineau sealed the victory for the visitors with a shot just under the crossbar.
Val-d'Or did earn another late power play and would lift Lemieux for an extra attacker in an attempt to get closer, but could not find a goal and the power play would end prematurely when Ouellet took a penalty of his own. As the horn ended sixty minutes of play the Screaming Eagles had notched their second straight win.
Kyle Jessiman turned aside 19 of 20 shots in the win, while Lemieux stopped 40 of 44 shots in the loss. Friday night marked the first game of the road trip for Peyton Hoyt who returned from an upper body injury. Hoyt won three of six faceoffs and registered three hits. The Eagles would lose the services of Tyler Hylland during the game though, as he left early in the first period with an upper body injury.
