Scrap Yard Dawgs News Release
Nashville, TN - November 30, 2015 - National Pro Fastpitch announced today the Scrap Yard Dawgs have finalized selections of five players through the NPF Expansion Draft. The five players, from three separate 2015 NPF affiliate teams, now have contractual rights committed to the Scrap Yard Dawgs, making them the first rostered players of the league's newest franchise.
The players are Megan Low (Akron Racers), Sami Garcia (PA Rebellion), Amber Freeman (USSSA Pride), Emilee Koerner (USSSA Pride) and Breja'e Washington (USSSA Pride).
Washington, an outfielder, leads the pack of expansion draftees with a .286 average through action in 34 games with just 2 starts. In 2015 Washington scored 18 runs for the Pride and stole 5 bases. As a rookie, Washington was awarded the Rally Spikes Award by 3n2 for leading the league with 17 stolen bases. Garcia, also an outfielder, racked 19 hits for a .264 average over 28 starts. Freeman, Koerner, and Low all saw limited action on their respective teams in 2015.
Per NPF regulations set forth in 2014 to help populate expansion teams with experienced players, the Scrap Yard Dawgs had the option of either taking one player tabbed a Market Choice Selection or five players from an assembled Expansion Draft. The Market Choice Selection is a college player selected prior to the College Draft, which is either originally from the state in which the new franchise is located, or competed collegiately in the state in which the new franchise is located. The Expansion Draft allows NPF affiliate teams to protect only a certain number of players on their respective rosters, leaving all unprotected players available in the Draft.
In 2014, the Dallas Charge opted for the Market Choice Selection, choosing shortstop, Renada Davis, a native of Texas.
The Scrap Yard Dawgs finalized their franchise purchase in October and will make The Scrap Yard Sports Complex their home venue beginning with the 2016 season. More information about the Dawgs including their home schedule, announcement of coaching staff and roster additions will be released in the coming months.
