SUGAR LAND, TEXAS - The Sugar Land Skeeters picked up a victory in their Spring Training debut, knocking off San Jacinto College, 10-1, on a beautiful Tuesday night at Constellation Field. Shane Loux (1-0) earned the victory, striking out a pair in one inning of work while Riley Smith was saddled with the loss for the Gators.
Travis Scott went 1-for-4 at the plate with a double, driving in a game-high four RBI while Denny Almonte drove in three with a double in the first. The Skeeters' bullpen, consisting of Daniel Meadows, Roy Merritt, Loux, Derek Blacksher, Cory VanAllen, Robbie Weinhardt and Adrian Martin, was superb, yielding three hits and one walk while striking out six over seven combined innings of work.
The Gators broke the scoring seal in the top of the first after staring pitcher Matt Maloney breezed through the first pair of batters. A two-out triple down the line in right by Josh Palacios followed by a single back up the middle from Walker Pennington staked San Jacinto to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
Sugar Land wasted no time in responding to the Gators early surge. Dustin Martin drew a five-pitch walk to open the bottom of the first followed by a single through the right side by Brooks Conrad. Delwyn Young worked a walk with a full-count before Scott drove in Martin with a groundout to first. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Almonte just missed a home run, on a double high off the wall in left center to give the Skeeters a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
Sugar Land expanded the lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to three walks, an error and a strikeout with a wild pitch. Patrick Palmeiro swung on a dropped third strike, but reached first after the ball eluded the catcher to the backstop. Beamer Weems reached base after breaking his bat on a shot that the shortstop was unable to handle. Martin picked up an RBI on a groundout to second before three straight walks to Young, Scott and Almonte plated another run, giving the Skeeters a 5-1 lead.
The Skeeters put up a slew of runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a three-run double off the bat of Scott. Palmeiro worked a one-out walk off Gator's reliever Rex Hill. Martin and Edwin Gomez hit back-to-back singles to left field and shortstop, respectively. Young drew his third walk on the night, while Palmeiro scored on a wild pitch during the at-bat. Scott rifled a double into the corner to clear the bases and push the edge to 9-1.
Sugar Land added a run in the seventh on a Kevin Russo single to right-center to increase the lead to 10-1.
The Skeeters continue the Spring Training series against San Jacinto tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission is open to the general public for $5.
