ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With a solid nucleus of offensive talent assembled for the upcoming 2002-2003 season, Pat Dunn and the New Mexico Scorpions have begun to bulk up defensively with the signing of Leigh Dean.

Dean, a 6 feet 3 inch, 205-pound defenseman from Denville, New Jersey signed a one year deal today, becoming New Mexico's first keeper of the blue line for the 2002-2003 season. Upon graduation from Providence College, where he played for three seasons, Dean began his professional career in the 2000-2001 season with the Pee Dee Pride of the East Coast Hockey League. He accumulated 6 assists in 54 games in his debut, and started the season with Pee Dee the next year. After 38 games, Dean was traded to Greensboro, where he tallied 2 goals and 6 assists in 31 games.

"We are pleased to have a player the quality of Leigh Dean", said Scorpions Head Coach Pat Dunn. "His stability and size fits in perfectly with our style of play, and the fact that he is American fits in with the league rules. It's nice to get a guy from the E (East Coast Hockey League), which is regarded as a top developmental league. By him coming here, it may attract others to join him".

"I am really looking forward to playing in New Mexico", said newly signed Scorpions Defenseman Leigh Dean. "It's a different part of the country, and I've heard nothing but good things about the organization. I'm interested to see what it's like in the CHL (Central Hockey League), and I'm just excited about it".

The 2002-2003 Central Hockey League season is slated to open on October 17th. New Mexico season tickets are now on sale. Contact the Scorpions office at 881-7825 for more information, or visit the Scorpions website at www.scorpionshockey.com.
