Scorpions to Play International Friendly against Costa Rica U-23s

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Wedesday, March 11, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions will play an international friendly against the Costa Rican U-23 national team, team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield announced today. The match will kickoff at 7:30pm on March 28th at Toyota Field.

"The Costa Rica U-23s will be a good challenge for us in our last preseason game before the NASL regular season begins," said Coach Alen Marcina. "Costa Rica has a strong tradition of qualifying for World Cups and has players in major leagues across the globe."

The U-23 squad is pulled together every four years to compete in the Summer Olympic Games. The current team that is preparing for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro is comprised of players who collectively have experience playing in; Ligue 1 in France, the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium, Topaz Premyer Liqasi in Azerbaijan, Major League Soccer in the United States, and Costa Rica's Primera División. The youth Costa Rican team recently competed against MLS teams the Philadelphia Union, the Columbus Crew, and Toronto FC in the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton, Florida.

"We feel it is important to give our team challenging match-ups as they prepare for the rigors of the NASL regular season," said Cornfield. "We will have faced three very different playing styles between FC Dallas, the Austin Aztex and the Costa Rica U-23s and it should be fun for fans to see how each match plays out tactically. These guys are not only future Olympians, but will be the heart of future World Cup teams for Costa Rica."
