New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League announced today that they have acquired defenseman Kris Currie from the Memphis RiverKings in exchange for defenseman David Bourque. Currie, 23, had three assists and was tied for the team lead with 121 penalty minutes in 32 games with the RiverKings. The trade was the first made by the Scorpions this season.

The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Strasbourg, Saskatchewan played 20 games last year with the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the East Coast Hockey League, recording a goal and two assists along with 47 PIM. He began his pro season in the CHL during the 2000-01 season, registering six points (1g-5a) and 205 PIM in 67 games with Macon and Fayetteville. Bourque had two goals and five points in 27 games with the Scorpions this year.

"I felt we needed a right-handed shooting defenseman to balance things out back there," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald. "Currie is a tough kid who is a right-handed shot and will add stability to our defensive corps.

The Scorpions also announced today that they have signed left wing Lukas Sedlacek (pronounced Sehd-LAH-check) and placed defenseman Dominic Plenzich on the 14-Day Injured Reserve retroactive to Dec. 28. Sedlacek, 20, played 26 games earlier this season with the Great Falls Americans of the America West Hockey League, where he was third on the team with 18 points (7g-10a-17pts). The 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Olomouc, Czech Republic played last year with Kometa HC Brno of the Czech First Division.

The Scorpions conclude a busy week this afternoon when they host McDonald's former team, the Lubbock Cotton Kings for a 3:05 p.m. matinee. The game can be heard on 1050 AM KTBL beginning with Scorpions Pregame at 2:50 p.m. Currie is expected to be in the lineup when the Scorpions take to the road this Friday, Jan. 10 to visit the Amarillo Gorillas at 6:11 p.m. MST.
