San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Thursday, February 26, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions have signed 2014 FIFA World Cup player and former Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Marvin Chávez, President/General Manager Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced this afternoon. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not released.

"The signing of Marvin Chavez is another statement about our club's ambitions for the 2015 season as we defend our NASL Championship," said Marcina. "He possesses tremendous pace, the ability to penetrate defenses, and has incredible technical skill on the ball. We're getting a dynamic game changer fresh off of a 2014 season playing in MLS and representing the Honduran National Team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup."

5'5" Chavez is a winger so known for his speed that his nickname is "el hijo del viento" or "the son of the wind." He has earned 42 caps for Honduras at the international level, including two appearances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Chavez has four international goals to his credit and was called up as recently as November, 2014, for a friendly against China.

"My main motivation [for coming to San Antonio] is my family," said Chavez. "I'm very convinced that I came to a championship team. I feel that I am [already] part of the team and I came here to add to the team's objectives. I am very happy with the coaching staff, I am very happy with the president, and with Gordon Hartman, owner of the Scorpions."

The native of La Ceiba, Honduras, has made over 100 appearances in MLS, most recently with Chivas USA in 2014. He has 15 career goals in MLS and had his best season while playing for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012. That year, he was named to the MLS All-Star team as he helped lead the Earthquakes to the Supporter's Shield with three goals and thirteen assists in 1,910 minutes played, including 23 starts.

"Marvin Chavez is very experienced and has competed at the highest level," said Cornfield. "We expect him to be an impact player for us on the field and a leader in the locker room as many of the young guys on our team will look up to someone that has played in the World Cup."

Chavez's professional career started in 2005 with Club Deportivo Victoria (LNP - Honduras) and he has also played for: Club Deportivo Marathón (LNP - Honduras), FC Dallas (Major League Soccer), San Jose Earthquakes (Major League Soccer), Colorado Rapids (Major League Soccer) and Chivas USA (Major League Soccer).
