San Antonio Scorpions News Release

San Antonio, TX (February 4, 2014) 2013 NASL Best XI, Richard "Richie" Menjivar, has signed onto the San Antonio Scorpions roster for 2014, President Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina confirmed today.

Menjivar, an American-born Salvadorian midfielder, earned his place onto the 2013 NASL Best XI after completing an outstanding season with the Atlanta Silverbacks, where he started in 21 of 24 games for two goals, and two assists. While with Atlanta, Menjivar played in the NASL's 2013 Soccer Bowl representing the spring champions in a match against the league's fall champions, the New York Cosmos.

The 23 year-old has also excelled internationally as a member of the Salvadorian national team. He started in all four of El Salvador's games in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and appeared in all but one of the team's international matches the same year. Prior to international play with El Salvador, The 5-foot-8 defensive midfielder represented the U.S. at the U-18 level in 2008 before being called into El Salvador's Olympic qualifying squad in 2012. In a match American soccer fans would rather forget, Menjivar started and went 90 minutes in El Salvador's 3-3 draw against the U.S. - a result that eliminated the Americans out of the 2012 Olympics in London.

Scorpions head coach, Alen Marcina describes Menjivar's signing as tactical and as a big win for the organization's growing roster. "This caliber of signing marks a significant coup for our club and statement towards the team we're building. Menjivar is a Best 11 midfielder with an astute understanding of the game and experience winning a championship as a captain in the NASL."

Before his professional and international undertakings, Menjivar played collegiate soccer in the U.S. He started at the University of Evansville in 2008, where he played two seasons. He was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team in 2008, and was second on the team in assists that season. Menjivar then transferred to CSU Bakersfield to play the final two seasons of his collegiate career.

With Richie Menjivar's signing, the Scorpions' roster is at twelve. With one week out from training camp, the Scorpions line-up currently confirms two NASL Best XI players with Menjivar and Walter Restrepo, six returning veterans; Tomasz Zahorski, Stephen DeRoux, Greg Janicki, Javier Saaverda and Jeremy Vuolo, along with the recent additions of Jonathan Fana, Danny Barrera, Shaun Saiko, and former MLS player, Adrian Cann.

Scorpions training camp begins February 10 with the home opener scheduled for April 12 at Toyota Field against Minnesota. Season tickets can be purchased at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster. Call 210.495.8686 for more information on tickets or log onto www.sascorpions.com.
