New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – After opening training camp on Monday, the New Mexico Scorpions will open their three-game preseason slate on Thursday in Corpus Christi, Texas against the host Rayz. This marks the second straight year that the Scorpions and Rayz will meet in the preseason. Philadelphia Flyers head coach Ken Hitchcock is helping out the Scorpions and Rayz during training camp.

Tomorrow's game has been designed as a showcase, with a variety of different formats being used. The first period will be a standard 20-minute period of hockey, with full penalties being called. The second period will feature each team having six minutes of 5-on-3 power play time, with the trailing team going on the attack first. The remaining eight minutes of the middle stanza will be 4-on-4, just like regular season overtime. Any penalties called during the second period will result in a penalty shot. The third period will be 20 minutes of 3-on-3 hockey, which should mean plenty of open ice, even on the small ice surface at Corpus Christi's Memorial Coliseum.

If overtime is necessary, a five-minute period will be played, with a major twist. After starting with the customary five skaters per team, the clock will stop promptly each minute and each team will remove one skater from the ice, meaning that the final minute of overtime would feature one skater per team squaring off against each other. If overtime is indecisive, a shootout will be held to determine the winner.

On Friday, the Scorpions will face the defending President's Cup champion Laredo Bucks in Corpus Christi. Both Thursday's and Friday's games start at 6 p.m. MDT. On Saturday, the Scorpions travel south for their first-ever meeting with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for a 6:30 p.m. MDT faceoff. The teams did not meet at all last year, but are scheduled to meet twice during the regular season. The Scorpions are not broadcasting preseason games but Saturday's game will be available through the Killer Bees' website at www.killerbeehockey.com.

Single-game tickets for the 2004-2005 CHL season start at $11 while season tickets start as low as $320. Both are on sale NOW! In addition, ten-game packages and Scorpions voucher books are available starting at $110. Full season ticket packages also include a free entry into the Scorps Rewards prize pool. A full list of prizes is available at www.scorpionshockey.com, and the first drawing will be held this Friday. The Scorpions open their ninth season of pro hockey at Tingley Coliseum on Oct. 29 when they host the Corpus Christi Rayz at 7:05 p.m. after beginning regular season play next Friday, Oct. 22 at Tulsa.
