San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL have re-signed four-time NASL Team of the Week defender, Stephen DeRoux, for the 2014 season, Scorpions President Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced on Monday.
DeRoux finished sixth on the Scorpions with 1,529 minutes played and collected an assist during the 2013 campaign. He continued to establish himself as the top left-back in the league, racking up Team of the Week appearances and Best XI nominations throughout the season. The former MLS player was a part of every Scorpions clean sheet and will link up with defensive teammate Greg Janicki once again in 2014.
"Stevie displayed throughout the entire 2013 season that he is an uncompromising defender who plays with an unwavering mentality, which resonates throughout our team and with our fans," said Marcina. "He's a key component of our defensive line who provides continuity, from last season, and versatility, as one of the best left-sided players in the league."
The Jamaican native kick-started his career with USL First Division side, the Minnesota Thunder, in 2008 before signing with the Montreal Impact the following season. He was selected to the USL all-first team after the '08 season, and the all-second team in 2009. DeRoux was an integral part of the '09 Impact team that won the USL championship over Vancouver FC. DeRoux has also spent time with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the NASL and the Baltimore Blast of MISL before joining the Scorpions in early 2013.
"It feels great to be back with the Scorpions," said DeRoux. "I really enjoyed the half season that I played under Alen as Head Coach. He got thrown into a tough situation, but he was composed and did what he had to do, so I am looking forward to spending a full season with him. I'm very happy to be in San Antonio and excited to help bring a championship to the club."
DeRoux was born in Jamaica and moved to the Washington DC/Maryland area where he played college soccer at Prince George's College in Largo, Maryland. He was named as an NSCAA Second Team All American at Prince George's in 2002. He went on to sign a developmental contract with MLS side D.C. United where he made 10 appearances between 2005 and 2008.
"Stephen was heavily pursued by other teams in the NASL and we are fortunate that he wants to remain a Scorpion," said Cornfield. "He is arguably one of the hardest working players in the league, and our fans love his all-out mentality."
DeRoux, who is currently playing in the MISL with the Baltimore Blast during the offseason, joins Janicki as returning members of the 2013 Scorpions defense for the 2014 season. Both players, along with the rest of the roster, will begin preparations for training camp in February.
