San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio - San Antonio Scorpions FC have renewed the contract of midfielder Javier Saavedra, and have signed Chris Williams and Stephen DeRoux for the 2013 season, Head Coach Tom Hankinson announced on Tuesday.
Saavedra, 39, made 13 appearances with the Scorpions in 2012, scoring one goal. He has made nine appearances with the Mexican National team and played the majority of his professional career with Tigres in the Mexican first-division where he made 297 appearances, scoring 22 goals.
"Its great to have Javier return," said Hankinson. "He is our elder statesman. With so much experience from the Mexican league and the Mexican National team, he brings a wealth of professionalism to the club."
DeRoux and Williams join the squad from the Baltimore Blast in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The duo is fresh off of winning the MILS Championship this season and will provide the Scorpions with excellent depth.
"The goal this year was to have two players at every position that we felt could compete, so players learn to push each other competitively which raises everyone's game," Hankinson said. "Stephen DeRoux gives us that second left-back to the team along with Blake Wagner. And Williams, being 6'3, will certainly be a presence in the center of defense with Luka Vucko and Greg Janicki."
DeRoux, a 29 year-old, 5'9 left back has also spent time with the Montreal Impact formerly of NASL, the Minnesota Thunder of the USL; where he scored one goal and was named to the "All-League First Team"; and D.C. United of MLS. The Jamaican born defender moved to Washington D.C. when he was 13 and attended Prince George's Community College.
Williams, 28, is a 6'3 central defender from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he also attended Philadelphia University. He has spent time with many clubs including Miami FC of the USL first division and Da Nang in the Vietnamese first division.
Williams and DeRoux will join up with the Scorpions squad in preparation for the start of the NASL season on April 6th, and the home opener in brand new Toyota Field on April 13th.
