San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The San Antonio Scorpions have re-signed central defender, Greg Janicki, for the 2014 North American Soccer League season, Scorpions President Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced on Tuesday.
The former USSF Division 2 Defender of the Year in 2010 will return to lead the Scorpions back line for a third season after first joining the club in 2012 during San Antonio's inaugural campaign. Janicki finished the 2013 season with 1,682 minutes played and was a part of all six Scorpions clean sheets during the Spring and Fall Seasons. Aside from missing six games due to injury and suspension, Janicki started the other 20 matches, going 90 minutes in 18 of them.
"Greg has been a mainstay in our defense the last two seasons and embodies the work ethic and passion of this club," said Marcina. "He is one of the best natural center backs in the NASL and he will be an integral member of the defense we are building."
Janicki was born in New Baltimore, MI and attended Michigan State University where he played soccer for four years and was named to the All Big-Ten Team during his senior season. In 2008 Janicki signed with the Pittsburgh RiverHounds of the USL Second division before joining MLS side DC United. From 2010-11 Janicki played for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the USSF Division 2 and MLS, playing in 36 matches and scoring four goals. He made the 2010 Best XI as well as his Defender of the Year title. Janicki made 20 appearances in 2012 with the Scorpions during their regular season championship run.
"I am excited to be able to continue to play for such a great organization," said Janicki. "Alen and I are on the same page on what we want to accomplish next season, and I can't wait to get started."
Janicki joins Tomasz Zahorski and Shaun Saiko as players on the 2014 Scorpions roster as they prepare for training camp in February.
"Alen continues to build on an exciting team that the fans will enjoy watching," said Cornfield. "Greg has been a stalwart of our team both on and off the pitch and we are fortunate that he wants to remain a vital part of our organization."
