Scorpions Open 2014 Training Camp

February 7, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release

San Antonio, TX (February 7, 2014) With players coming into position to take up residency in San Antonio over the weekend, Monday marks the start of the Scorpions 2014 training camp.

The Scorpions organization has undergone several internal changeovers since 2013's training camp, including the appointment of head coach, Alen Marcina. With a one month jump start on this season's training camp, the Scorpions' rebuilt roster will have more time to learn Coach Marcina's systems.

"Since the conclusion of the 2013 NASL season, we've identified the system and style we are going to play. We targeted the areas to improve upon and steadfastly worked to assemble the squad of players that not only meets our goals, but also the standards our fans and city deserve," Marcina said. "We have developed an infrastructure, expanded our staff and implemented a great plan for long term success."

The recent signing of Richie Menjivar, acquired from the Atlanta Silverbacks, gives the current Scorpions' line-up five NASL Best XI players with Menjivar, Walter Restrepo, Shaun Saiko and veterans Greg Janicki and Stephen DeRoux. Tomasz Zahorski, Javier Saaverda, Sainey Touray, and Jeremy Vuolo will return, and the additions of Jonathan Fana, Danny Barrera, and former MLS player, Adrian Cann add depth and leadership to the growing list.

Scorpions President Howard Cornfield describes the roster as youthful and ambitious. "We have a lot of up and coming, young players this season; they are very hungry. Last year, we had a lot of veteran players that maybe did not have the same passion as we have now. The personality of the team is completely different and reflects hard lessons learned from last year."

In addition to the extended training camp (last year's training camp lasted one month), the Scorpions will play anywhere from six to eight friendlies, including FC Dallas of MLS on March 1. The extended duration of training camp, as well as the preseason matches, will give the Scorpions the opportunity to cohere and to prepare for NASL play.

"As our preseason is about to commence, I'm excited to show the fans our progress and begin preparing for our run to the 2014 NASL Soccer Bowl," Coach Marcina said.

The Scorpions first scheduled scrimmage is February 22 at 1PM versus Southern Methodist University at Toyota Field and will be free to the public.

The Scorpions will also host the deeproot Funds Cup friendly versus FC Dallas on March 1, 7 PM, at Toyota Field. The FC Dallas friendly is "Bonus Game A" in the 2014 San Antonio Scorpions season ticket package. Tickets are currently on sale at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster.

The first NASL home opener is scheduled for April 12 at Toyota Field against Minnesota. Season tickets start at only $10 per game and can be purchased at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster. Call 210.495.8686 for more information on tickets or log onto www.sascorpions.com.
